Pedn Vounder

Updated: Oct 1, 2024

One of the most unforgettable hiking adventures we've ever embarked on in Cornwall and I cannot recommend it more.

Nearest big town: Penzance

Duration: Around 2 hours / 3 miles circular route

It all begins (and ends!) in Treen

Treen has a well-maintained, affordable car park located just a short walk from the village and the coast. The Treen Car Park, run by the local community, for a small fee, offers a convenient spot for those planning to hike the surrounding cliffs, visit the iconic Logan Rock, or make the steep trek down to Pedn Vounder Beach. It also provides ample space during the busy summer months, and from here, you can easily follow the footpaths leading to the coast or nearby sites.

Treen may be small, but it boasts some delightful places to enjoy a bite to eat after a day of exploring.

Here are a couple of must-visit stops for great food and a welcoming atmosphere:

  1. The Logan Rock Inn: This traditional Cornish pub is the heart of Treen and a favourite among locals and visitors alike. With its cosy interior and classic pub deliciousness, The Logan Rock Inn is the perfect place to re-fuel. The menu offers hearty meals like fish and chips, Cornish pasties, and freshly caught seafood. If you’re lucky, you might catch a live folk music session or one of the pub's popular quiz nights. There’s also a spacious beer garden, ideal for a pint on sunny afternoons.

  2. Treen Café: For something a little lighter, Treen Café is a lovely stop. It serves freshly brewed coffee, teas, homemade cakes, and light lunches. This charming spot is perfect for a relaxing break after a coastal walk, offering great views and a friendly atmosphere. Their cream teas, with scones, jam, and clotted cream, are a must-try for anyone looking for a true taste of Cornwall!

Pedn Vounder

Nestled along the stunning coastline of Cornwall, Pedn Vounder Beach is a true hidden gem. Tucked between towering cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise waters, this secluded paradise offers a magical escape for nature lovers, adventurers, and beachgoers alike.

Located near the quaint village of Treen, Pedn Vounder can only be accessed by a steep and challenging descent, making it feel like a secret spot reserved for those who are willing to explore off the beaten path. The journey down may require some caution, but the reward is an unspoiled beach with soft golden sands and dramatic views of Logan Rock.

One of the unique features of Pedn Vounder is its tidal sandbar, which emerges at low tide, creating a stunning natural lagoon where the water is warm and shallow—perfect for paddling or wading in. The beach’s wild beauty is framed by the lush green cliffs, providing a picturesque backdrop that makes it one of the most photogenic locations in Cornwall, surely.

While it may not have the facilities of a more commercial beach, the charm of Pedn Vounder lies in its natural, untouched environment. It’s a popular spot for those seeking peace, solitude, and a touch of adventure.

Though rumour has it, that it is indeed a popular escape for those who like clothing to be optional on a beach (nudge nudge wink wink!), and totally confirmed online by the locals Tips for Visiting Pedn Vounder Beach in Cornwall - The Cornish Life | Cornwall Lifestyle Blog - a blog you should genuinely read if you are thinking of heading down and staying on this beach, for safety, toilet stops and detailed parking options.

Porthcurno

Beyond Treen and Pedn Vounder lies Porthcurno. It is home to the Minack Theatre, an iconic open-air venue perched on the cliffs, with the beautiful Cornish horizon for its backdrop. History buffs will also love the Porthcurno Telegraph Museum, which tells the story of the village’s crucial role in global communications as a hub for undersea telegraph cables.

Parking is available near the beach, though it can fill up quickly in summer, so arrive early. For a bite to eat, there are a few lovely cafés nearby, and you can also enjoy a picnic on the beach with unbeatable views.

So you can easily make this wonderful walk a full day adventure, would not get bored, find lots of delicious food stops along the way and will be blow away by the beauty and history of this place.
