Herts #8: Great Amwell

Updated: May 29, 2024

A regular favourite route for me and Pepper, which we absolutely adore and there is plenty of cake, I mean fun, for the whole family, a steam train and a mini zoo.

Nearest town: Ware

Distance: Flexible

Duration: Flexible

Just after the Amwell Nature Reserve in Ware, lies Great Amwell. It is a quieter route than the reserve but just as beautiful. If you continue on the canal path, you will eventually reach the Van Hage Great Amwell | Blue Diamond. Its a perfect spot for young families in particular, with so much entertainment for the little ones. You can venture to the mini steam train for a ride around, or the mini animal keep ( a licenced mini zoo) for you to explore. Here is a great website which describes these fun activities : Van Hage Animal Garden & Miniature Railway - Round About Harlow. Often in spring and summer, there are even more things on offer. And why not walk there all the way from the nearest town Ware? To top it all off, there's is a wonderful café for cake and a good cuppa.

Van Hagues is dog friendly everywhere, shop included.

And in case you need to stop for a pint or bevvy on the way back, there is George IV Pub – Pub & Dining – Great Amwell. We've never visited but heard so many lovely things! The pub is dog friendly in the gardens only mind. Happy wandering!
