Herts #43: Roydon

Nestled near the Essex border, Roydon offers a delightful mix of rural charm and scenic walking opportunities.


Nearest town: Hertford

Duration: Around 2 hours 30 minutes


Walking Highlights

Ever so slightly cheating because some of the walk is in Essex rather than Hertfordshire, but I hope it still counts!


One popular route is the Roydon Country Walk, a 5-mile trail starting from the village green and church. This walk takes about two hours, offering a mix of countryside views and historical sights. Be prepared for some road walking and potentially muddy paths during wet weather. The nearby Lee Valley Park provides additional walking and cycling trails with stunning views and abundant wildlife, making it ideal for a longer adventure. Although, given all routes are very close to water, some paths can flood after heavy rain, so you need to be prepared with alternatives or even turn back on yourself. Which you can probably tell was exactly my experience on a few occasions haha!


Food and Drink Stops

After your walk, enjoy refreshments at the Cricketers Pub, a cosy spot serving classic British dishes in a welcoming atmosphere. Alternatively, visit the Boathouse Café Bar at Roydon Marina Village, where you can enjoy meals and drinks with views of the marina. Both venues are family-friendly and perfect for relaxing after a day outdoors. Both venues are of course dog friendly.
