Nestled in the Chiltern Hills, Ashridge Estate in Hertfordshire offers a stunning setting for a day of exploration and tranquillity. Managed by the National Trust, this 5,000-acre estate is a paradise for walkers, with a mix of ancient woodlands, rolling meadows, and breath-taking views.

Trails for Everyone

Ashridge Estate boasts a variety of walking routes, from gentle strolls to more challenging hikes. Popular trails include the Clipper Down walk, with sweeping views of the chalk escarpment, and the Wildlife Walk, perfect for spotting deer and rare birds.

Nature at Its Best

The estate is a haven for wildlife, especially during seasonal highlights. In spring, the woodland floors are carpeted with bluebells, while autumn transforms the trees into a riot of orange and gold. The peaceful environment is ideal for reconnecting with nature.

Iconic Landmarks

Don’t miss the Bridgewater Monument, an iconic tower that offers panoramic views for those who climb it, as well as of course the Ashridge Estate itself.

Food Stops and Pubs

After a refreshing walk, you’ll find several cosy spots to enjoy some food or a drink. The Ashridge Estate Café serves a selection of homemade cakes, sandwiches, and hot drinks, making it a perfect pit stop for walkers. There are often hot drink and food trailers along the car park which gives you plenty of options.

Beware though, you may need a few coins for parking.

For a heartier meal, head to The Greyhound Inn in nearby Aldbury, a traditional pub offering delicious British fare and a welcoming atmosphere. Alternatively, The Bridgewater Arms ( Greene King branch) is another lovely local pub where you can unwind after your adventure with a classic pub meal and a pint.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, a family outing, or a quiet retreat, Ashridge Estate has it all. With its vast landscapes, charming food stops, and serene beauty, it’s a walking destination you’ll return to time and again. All of which was completely dog-friendly.
