Herts #36: The Old Knebworth

Knebworth, a vibrant village in Hertfordshire, is the perfect destination for a leisurely walk filled with scenic views, historical landmarks, and a sense of community charm. Whether you’re a seasoned rambler or just looking for a peaceful stroll, Knebworth has something to offer for everyone.


Stately Elegance at Knebworth House

A walk in Knebworth isn’t complete without a visit to the iconic Knebworth House. This stunning Tudor Gothic mansion, surrounded by lush parklands and gardens, is a must-see. The beautifully landscaped grounds include enchanting woodland trails, a delightful walled garden, and even a dinosaur trail for younger adventurers. It is free to walk past the house using the free public footpaths, but to enter inside and take part in any activities put on by the house and grounds, you may be required to pay for a ticket.


The grounds of the house, where it is free to walk along the public footpaths, have two herds of deer: one which stays close to the house (mostly boys), and then girls and youngsters roam all over the contained grounds, and unlike the lads, can be harder to spot, though we've seen every time. The grounds and footpaths are dog friendly, though it is advised to keep your pooches on a lead.


Though watch out, parking right inside the house seems to be only for paying visitors, therefore we've tended to find a perching spot around the village of which there's always plenty.


Village Vibes and Countryside Charm

The village of Knebworth itself offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Stroll along its charming streets, admire its historic buildings, or take a moment to relax in the local cafes or pubs of which there are plenty to chose from. From here, you can venture out to explore the surrounding Hertfordshire countryside, with its tranquil footpaths and open fields into much longer country hikes.

As the setting for legendary music concerts, Knebworth holds a special place in the hearts of music fans. Walking around the grounds where bands like Queen and Oasis once performed adds a unique touch to your exploration.
