A walk through Walkern in Hertfordshire offers a delightful mix of history and countryside charm. Trails around the village lead you past charming cottages, the tranquil River Beane, and St. Mary’s Church, an ancient church with Norman features and connections to the legendary tale of Jane Wenham, one of England’s last accused witches.
There is a Purbeck marble effigy of a knight with crossed legs. The cross-legged attitude in tomb sculpture was fashionable in the British Isles in the 13th century. It has been suggested that the sculpture represents William de Lanvalei, Lord of Walkern in the early 13th century, and one of the men designated as enforcers of Magna Carta.
Wander along the village’s paths to enjoy open fields, lush woodlands, and a scattering of wildlife. The village also has a few cosy pubs and cafes, perfect for a post-walk refreshment. Whether you’re a history buff or nature lover, Walkern’s scenic and storied setting offers a memorable walking experience.
Visit the The White Lion Walkern - Family & dog friendly village pub with great food or Brewery Tearooms and Gift Shop for delicious treats.
