Herts #26: Amwell Nature Reserve

One of my most favourite accessible walks, alongside the perfect hot drink and cake location.

Nearest town: Ware

Duration: Around 1 hour or flexible

Amwell Nature Reserve, just outside Ware, is a stunning spot for a walk, offering a peaceful escape into diverse habitats and a gentle walk along the river. Known for its rich wildlife, especially bird species, the reserve is a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike. Follow the well-marked trails to encounter serene lakes, reed beds, and woodland areas, all teeming with life.

The reserve features several bird hides and lakes, making it a great place to spot kingfishers, herons, and other waterfowl throughout the year.

In warmer months, you’ll find colourful dragonflies and butterflies adding even more vibrancy to the scenery. It’s a truly relaxing walk, ideal for families, or solo explorers looking to unwind in nature.

Bring your binoculars, pack a picnic, and enjoy the tranquillity of one of Hertfordshire’s most beautiful natural spaces!
